The Beginning of a Productive Summer

Today the kids came back to the gardens for the summer, and it was a welcome site to see some of the same ones I had seen from the year before....they all knew what they had done last year and just jumped right in!!! I could not have been prouder to see that they were still very much interested in getting things planted and started. They were quite surprised to find out that we had added some chickens and bees to our community garden which is quickly growing into an urban farm as we have expanded to an additional lot this year as you can see by the video slides. They were very much interested in holding and petting the chickens and insisted on carrying them around as if they were their pets...and the kids actually got to experience a taste of real honey that we had taken from the hive a couple of days before their arrival. It was a good day and makes it all worthwhile when you see the smiles and enthusiasm on their faces. It was hot outside, but that didn't stop them from working and taking a cool run thru the sprinklers..

21st Century Publicity

It is so nice to see this Hazelwood Harvest BLOGGER started. I cannot wait until the local young folks (AND the old folks) start putting their helpful hints onto the site.

We are receiving tomatoes at the church, hopefully next week. If the rain settles for a minute there is the possibility of the Lytle/Elizabeth site waking up to top soil from a new neighborhood source, so there will be a resting place for the many plants that have been started in folks' homes and churches.

During one of my prayer walks in Hazelwood I came across a bamboo forest right here in the 'wood. I had heard about it, but did not realize the number or the size of some of the now bamboo trees. Some are upwards of 1.5" in diameter and 10 or more feet tall.

Volunteers

Hazelwood Harvest is requesting volunteers interested in providing a helping hand nurturing and caring for its urban community garden sites this spring and summer in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
Started last year with one site, the all-volunteer community garden engages children and teenagers from the neighborhood to grow nutritious produce for the community. Excess produce will be donated to food bank, and sold thru youth run market stand.
Hazelwood Harvest hopes to expand the community gardens to several additional plots this year. The garden 2009 season begins March 30.
For more information or to schedule your group to volunteer please call Barbara Williams at Hazelwood Harvest, (412) 421-0571 or email
